Leaving Comfort

Hi OGs,

It has been a minute since i posted here, this pandemic has been kicking my butt, I’m still here, and you are too, so no complains๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š. Today we will be talking about leaving comfort, this topic seems astute given that the economies of the world are beginning to open up, so there is no better time to wake-up than now

The idea of leaving comfort may sometimes seem unnecessary and insanely difficult, but just like we may enjoy rest for a while, our body was not built for stagnancy. Prolonged stagnation risks atrophy so does staying in your comfort zone. Before you know it, things that used to come naturally to you become difficult, you lose intellect, speed, urgency, and most importantly, you lose zest.

Disquietude in your spirit may be because you have outgrown where you are, and your unease may stem from the claustrophobia of your comfort zone getting too small for you. It is time to move. This article is specific to career development, but the theory holds for other areas of life, including relationships.

I remember when I was deciding to leave a well-paying career-building job to get a global MBA and work at a global company. I will think about it for a while and then put it aside for weeks and months, and then something upsetting will happen, or I will feel a wave of dissatisfaction with my current situation and be reminded of my abandoned goals. But I will still make excuses to myself as to why things will not work. In all honesty, most of these excuses were not frivolous; they were valid. I will think about how daunting it will be to move countries with two children for an intensive MBA program, or the strain it will put on my relationships, the opportunities foregone in my current career, and the sunk cost of the life that we had built already at home. Valid right!!! However, looking back now, it is clear that these excuses were not insurmountable. Because your reasons are valid does not justify not leaving.

It is never easy to leave comfort, if it were, everyone will do it, but it must be done to get to the next phase of your life. The law of inertia postulates that an object at rest will continue to be at rest unless an external force act on it. It will be uncomfortable to get past your comfort zone, and it is ok to be afraid, but you must dig deep and create that force that will project you into your destiny.

  1. Awesome piece Yetty!!

We oftentimes tend to move things around to reduce the claustrophobia and create a false sense of space or change but until we step out of that comfort zone we will never experience our full capacity to take up challenges and thrive.
